Book Clip: Chapter Love and Marriage Copyright ©2016 Suzie Tyler
We both wanted to start out on the right track and he said,
“I want to do it proper and ask your dad for your hand in marriage.”
The 3rd weekend in November, we drove to Sulphur Springs to visit with my dad. He had talked with my dad at length about the bible several times and respected him but he told me he was really nervous.
The radio was playing a Jim Reeves song,
♫♪ … Heaven is smilin' because you love me. It's as plain as can be you're my love. Ask the stars that shine there above you who loves you and needs you tonight. They'll tell you it's I who loves you and I'm lonely when you're out of my sight … ♫♪
I was holding his hand and could feel his sweaty palms and teased him, “You don’t have to do this. You can just stay single and lonely.” Laughing he said, “Nawh, you’re worth it.”
The song is ending as we pull into my dad’s driveway.
♫♪ …You are my darling, there’s no one but you and to you I’ll be true our whole life through. Heaven in smilin' because you love me it' as plain as can be you're my love.♫♪
He winked at me and whispered, “I love you.”
When we arrived, Eula, my stepmother, had baked a cake and served us a piece and the guys drank a cup of coffee. I asked for a glass of milk and she got it for me. After we finished eating, Odis told daddy he wanted to talk with him privately and they walked outside on the porch. I stayed inside with my stepmother. I could tell he was nervous and he told me later his heart was beating so fast as he told him he wanted to marry me. I could see them through the glass storm door as they were talking and I was nervous for him.
I saw them shake hands and both came back in smiling and talking. I figured that was a good sign. As they walked into the door, I heard my dad say, “Just remember, if for some reason you don’t want to keep her, bring her back home and I’ll take her off your hands.”
He related to me on the way home their conversation. He knew I had always been a daddy’s girl and said,“I told him, ‘I love Suzie and want to marry her. She loves you very much and I would never try to replace you in her life’.”
He continued,
“I’m sure my blood pressure was pretty high and told him I believed God had given us a second chance. I let him know that I would never hurt you and promised to take good care of you and Diane until Jesus comes.”
He told me that Daddy said,
“I know you love her and you love God. If you promise to be faithful and good to her, I will give my blessing.”
He told him,
“I promise, Mr. Edwards. You will never have to worry about her being loved and taken care of.” He was happy to have his approval and breathed a sigh of relief.

I said, “Now you know how I felt when I met your mom and dad and boys.”
He laughed and said, “At least you didn’t have to ask them for my hand in marriage.”
