Against All Odds plots two young people in 1958, who fall in love and develop a special relationship. Early snapshots taken by a Kodak camera, reveal the exciting changes they were about to experience. The pictures have faded and yellowed from time, but these 40-year-old images will always be colorful and vivid of times gone by for Suzie Edwards and Odis Tyler.
During their 1958 courtship, there was a planned marriage proposal but postponed because of her age. When a job ended, a separation occurred. After the post office returned a letter of explanation, they did not know what happened and never expected to see each other again.
With different plans and poor marriage choices, they both ended up with divorces. Starting their life over, they looked for a fresh start and prayed for a Christian mate who had their same values. The young love created fifteen years before had remained in their thoughts, but they did not know the whereabouts of each other.
In April 1973 they were four-hundred-fifty miles away from each other but renewed their relationship with a surprise phone call. After a conversation, they agreed to send pictures and keep in touch.
They met thirteen days later in Texarkana on Sunday, May 6. It was their first time seeing each other in fifteen years. In the reminiscing six-hour setting , a passion was reborn and brought to life again! An innocent kiss on their ‘first date’ took the dinner date to another level. The kiss awoke their souls to a devoted love rare outside of dreams. The man in the moon nestled above in a sky of stars, came together to smile on them recreating their passion. There was a sparkle in Odis’ eye as his heart became encircled with love and devotion for Suzie and he knew it would last a lifetime. This mystery man created a dream world with more attention than she had ever known before.
It was a surprise awakening that set off a burning fire in their hearts that had been asleep. They opened their hearts to a love that changed the present and future, erased the hurts of the past and became the “rest of the story.” With their Christian faith, they believed they were the answer to each other’s prayer.
A few days after their trip down memory lane, Odis wrote a letter from deep within his heart and soul,
“I enjoyed being with you. You have turned my world upside down, and all I can think of now is you. I have been in a daze since seeing you. You would be easy to love, Sue.
Life has always been a puzzle to me, but usually, I can think things out and put the pieces together. I haven’t been able to figure this out yet as to how and why things happened the way they did. I told God that I would do anything He wanted me to do if He would give me you.”
You can call it fate or coincidence, God or just
luck, but they believe it was destiny. From the first
moment they held each other in 1958, they knew
they were born to be together. Events and circumstances had dictated an
alternative route, but while making their way back to each other, a silent love
communicated across the miles and eons of time.
With no email or text capabilities, Odis sent his love in cards and letters during the seven months of their courtship. This correspondence supplied information to write their special ‘Love Story’ 43 years later. AGAINST ALL ODDS, We Found The Perfect Love, is a collection of those words appearing in different chapters telling the story with data gleaned from these letters. Going Against the Odds of the challenges they met, each step was a new encounter neither had experienced before. It was a gamble with their future, but a love for God and each other paid enormous dividends. In this book, you will be transported back in time to ‘fill in the blanks’ for one of the most incredible stories of true love ever written.
After reading this book, I believe you can say without a doubt; a puzzle came together to create a picturesque love story that would astonish any Hollywood producer. It is the voyage of a love that ended but began with a written letter.
